Agree ^ Early years are the most important in the long run in terms of the establishing your fundamental relationship with them (whether they see you as a warm/nurturing figure that they can depend on). Can’t recover from a poor early relationship.
They’ll still need you though in high school to provide guidance. That’s when things can go off the rails.
You’ll need to find a balance where you can BE PRESENT with your kids during ALL THESE YEARS. You shouldn’t neglect your relationship with your spouse either!
I too think about this all the time. I feel like I don’t want to miss my kids 3-12 age range... after that, I feel like they will be a bit more autonomous and will want their independence...
I have had a good few years in consulting and don’t mind slowing down a bit... but then again... I m a bit concerned about the compensation growth
In my opinion the impactful years are 8-12 ie, the age when they start to have their identity. I do feel like I’m missing out and really considering slowing things down to be there for them. But, the lack of $$ growth does concern me.
Developmentally, 0-3 is the most important. (0-6 if you had to get very specific). This is the first plane of development and they are learning how relationships work, how family should look like, and how society should look like. The importance of the first 3 years of life can't be understated. Everything stores in their subconscious. These three years are the foundation for the rest of their lives.
My wife is going through her AMI Montessori training for children that are 0-3. So I've learned this from her. As a part of her Masters in Education studies, she's had to learn about all the places of development, neurological growth, etc. We also have a 2 year old daughter.
I think if you study the 4 planes of development that the Montessori education talks about, you can find more information!
In a nutshell:
1st plane is split into two: 0-3 & 3-6
2nd plane is: 6-12
3rd plane is split into two: 12-15 & 15-18
4th plane is: 18-24
The first place (especially the first part) is where over 80% of neurons are placed in the brain, so 80% of development is in the first 3 years. This is where humans develop an understanding of the world, reality, family, community, society, etc. So if you want them to be a doting parent who prioritizes family above all, and shows them what it's like to be in a relationship, then those are the years (but if you can, extend to year 6) that you should model that. Feel free to DM me, and I'll put you in touch with my wife.
OP, I’ll defer to the previous posts that all years are important for different reasons. That said, I also hear what you say regarding securing the family’s financial future. We live in a HCOL area, want to be in a good neighborhood, save for good colleges, afford vacations, and other trappings of a good life. I would suggest you look at and articulate what your transferable skill sets are, such as corp dev. Then look at the high growth companies with such a need in your area or someplace you’d want to live. I think you’ll find that there are options for base, bonus, equity, total comp packages that still give you a comparable or better financial outlook with much better WLB. When my kid was born, I started looking and now work 8-5 and am comped higher than I was, with a growth trajectory still.
I would say 0-5 are absolutely most critical and that we severely misunderestimate (to borrow G-W’s word) the potential of our children to learn early!
My girl was reading at 3 years old and now at 5 is reading in two diff languages (at an adult level in one of them) and is fascinated by Chemistry and Anatomy. I’d encourage you to take a look at Glen Doman’s work (see his books) and the institute that continues his work today: https://iahp.org/
Well this makes me feel awful about consulting for the next five years
