But $500K and single would be the sweet spot.

Kids are expensive but 500k is good. Depends on your spending habits. Mom raised 4 kids on 35k. We shared rooms, hand me down clothes, road trips rather fly, limited food. My kids now eat what they want, attend private lessons, music classes, swim, have their own computers and iPads, have their own rooms in 5 bed home. It’s all relative!

Props to your mom.

$500k easily. I have two kids. People really overestimate how expensive kids are.
Yeah what the hell are these people spending on their kids? No way kids will be more than $350K
If location is the same, the single person. Kids are so freaking expensive.

500K I would say. But probably also depends on age of kids and do you need to pay for child care or not. Too many variables to say. For example, my monthly expenses are the same married with kids as when I was making 70K as a single person in my 20s.

I had more disposable income when I was earning $150K (single) than when I was earning $500K (family).
But that was temporary. I had set my life up for like $650K in earnings, so $500K wasn’t quite enough. Now, I have more than enough.
I could have had plenty of disposable income at $500K. Had just chosen not to.

What kind of question is this? As usual, it depends.
Alix called it exactly! You may have more money at $500K, but it isn’t just yours, and it is spoken for - daycare ($15k/yr/kid here, college savings, activities, clothes that they grow out of in 2 seconds, healthcare, life insurance - didn’t need this before kids, food, etc)
We’re on $180K TC as a family with one toddler (I’m a SIWK!) and making it work. $500K with two kids sounds like a dream to me
The wife and 2 kids make you richer. Reprioritize.
Depends how dramatically you spend on kids. The way my parents did it, 500k is way more
Funny that it was exactly me from 2018 to 2021.
You have more disposable $$ with 500K, as our cost of living jumped from 60K to maybe 120K with two kids.
Kids, depending on age, are not that expensive. You’re looking at 8-10k annually for daycare until they get into KG. After which you’re just saving for college.
Again, it depends on so many factors.
If you have lifestyle inflation to the point where $500k isn’t enough to support 4 people, that is on you. Kids are expensive, but not to the tune of $125k each. My parents raises 4 kids on $70k a year, and while it certainly is more expensive now, there is no way that 2 kids couldn’t be living comfortably with their parents making $500k.
