Many HNW clients seek that when looking for advisors online. You may be losing potential new clients without knowing it. I have it, have 15 years in the biz, 800k production. Two or three times a year I land someone largely because of those three letters. I am probably the dumbest CFP I know, too.😀
I did the cfp this year. I did it more for personal improvement than for marketing. Yeah it takes time but I learned a lot when it came to insurance, Medicare, taxes, estate planning and stuff on the periphery of our day to day role. You won't learn Investment or retirement planning strategies you don't already know. I work in a rural area where there's not a ton of high net worth people so not many know what it is. But at jones they'll pay for it so why not?
Those of you who said it gave you a lot of information. And you learned a lot... How often if ever do you utilize that knowledge in your day today practice? Honest question not baiting.
Only 20% who start the CFA finish it. I would recommend your drive be more than just the challenge. Level III is very focused on our business and is moving more that direction. Plus it provides credibility when researching investments with the portfolio managers or relationship managers. If you rely on home office or TAMP then may not be worth it.
Mp1 you are only as good as how much your clients pay you. Get a grip.
You are right FA3. If I could I would delete my last post. It was unfair and uncalled for. I’m sincerely sorry, Jersey.
99% of us come here to share thoughts and ideas of a positive nature. I will try and keep with that going forward.
Even on brokercheck I think there's a link to investment advisor registrations as well. If you're trying to verify someone's CFP credentials you can go direct to cfpboard.net.
JSP, Ha! I don’t know who that was addressed to but the first person specifically said they make education their priority.
I still plan to go back and finish the CFA one of these days... Anyone who has it has every right to brag. CMT curriculum changed my business though.
More letters after your name? :)
No worries MP. Wasn't trying to dig at you either. I know a lot of CFAs and most couldn't trade themselves out of a paper bag. Too much theory. That designation would be more of a trophy to me.
But back to the point of the thread I really do consider myself more of a relationship manager and a behavioral manager then any kind of investment analyst and I do use my firm's people to take care of most of that.
MP1, how do you check one's CFP U4?
Managing Partner 1. I have spent the majority of my career client facing, most of it with the letters CFA behind my name. It is clear you don’t understand the body of knowledge that the program covers, including client issues.
^I saw that and yeah I was being a little snarky but the overall tone didn't seem like someone who makes education a priority, seemed like someone who's trying to do the least he can get by with. But I'm kind of a nerd so I'm biased lol. 16 yrs FP exp, big producer, I'd say just go sit for the exam once then decide. Maybe he'd pass without prep it could happen.
How you infer tone from a typed post I'll never know... But anyway thanks for the input
Is there much value to a CFA if you're an fa?
I believe so and more are pursuing it.
I would never do the CFA I do the CIMA way before I do the CFA.
Will jones pay for an fa to do the CFA? I had thought about it just for the challenge
I believe they will
Also considering doing an online MBA. But that would cost a lot out of pocket.
