Seattle is more expensive but not that expensive
I'm with you C2, probably in the same boat.
220k will be 8k-9k per month after taxes (assuming 220k is your total comp not base salary). House in Seattle costs 700-800k. Mortgage would be 3k-4K. So 50% of your salary is for housing, 25% for expenses and 25% for savings/investments. I think it’s a good deal (not extraordinary but good deal that you should not pass up)
Thanks!!!
Nerd wallet says
$220k in Seattle is the move.
Make a counter offer.
Don’t forget, no income tax in Washington, that alone saves you ~10-15k a year
They will get that money through property or sales tax. Gotta make dough some way.
What kind of life do you want? I live in ATL and I think it’s fantastic. But it suits my lifestyle perfectly. I think you can have a good life in either city with the salaries you mentioned - so you should figure out what suits you better
My lifestyle? I wanted something slower paced compared to my life in NYC. I wanted a cost of living where I could afford a decent sized house located in a central location where I can walk to restaurants and bars - and at same time, have the funds to still travel (which, being at a Delta hub, is super easy). There’s lakes/hiking nearby when I want more of nature. And there’s ample things to do in the city / places to eat and drink that are popping up regularly. All in all, it’s pretty laid back living.
You couldn’t pay me enough to deal with the miserable weather in Seattle most of the year
Downtown is pricey, thanks Amazon. However, lots of surrounding areas are great. I’m in South Seattle on the light rail, 20 min to downtown and 15 min to the airport, 4-bd house for a reasonable amount.
Google life in Seattle vs Atlanta
And think of your next 2 jobs ...
Seattle is the place to be
Seattle if you are in Tech. Skies the limit over here for Tech. That 220 can easily turn into 320 within the next 2-5yrs! but definitely counter with $250k and mention high cost of living...
Why so much hate for Seattle? I think it’s a gorgeous city with lots of outdoor stuff to do. Plus it’s close to all major vacation destinations like Alaska, British Columbia, California, Hawaii etc. What more do you all want?
Weather sucks 8 months out of the year
Seattle. Atlanta sucks
Atlanta is one of the worst cities in the US. Seattle is definitely the move
SM2–thanks for info. Asian as in Indian Asian or Chinese/Korean etc.? Liberal in what sense - fiscally or socially? I
I’d rather gouge my eyes out than live in the PNW, especially SEA. I LOVE ATL! Would love to move down there and enjoy the LCOL.
I’d take the SEA job if you can counter at $240k+ though. There’s something to be said for living well.
I’d never live in Atlanta, love it here in Seattle. Summers are amazing and you can’t beat the access to incredible nature. No income taxes is also awesome
Seattle all the way. First off no income taxes and not that much more expensive when you talk about living in prime areas. Plus just way cooler vibe, amazing summers, beautiful area.
For the money thing- nerdwallet or salary.com or pay scale will help. Seattle is in a rainforest- rains 10 months out of year. Hope you are not a depressive. I live in Hotlanta- and that hot is evident in summer and you can play golf all year round.
but that earthquake tho
Seattle hands down
Atlanta sucks sandy balls...
