Oh I’ll jump on that bandwagon. I’ve been on the road for 20 years and am ready to be done with it. I’ve realized recently how many life experiences I’ve exchanged for work I “must” do, and sadly so.
No one at work recognized/applauded me for working on a proposal (took a call) during my family’s Christmas Eve dinner 5 years ago...but everyone in my family mentions it as a ground rule ever since (no laptops or work calls during Christmas Eve dinner).
I’ve spent more nights in a Marriott each year than one should, more red eye flights that have probably disrupted my sleep and shortened my life. And for what? I was recently told by my career coach that I am “overpaid”. 🙄.
I’ve even been told “now is not a good time” for an injury that required surgery. I’ll never forget how inconsiderate/inconvenient it was of me to get injured....never mind asking if I’m ok or need help
D1 hope you are recovered from the injury. Sorry to hear that. The expectation to be always on is not fair in consulting and I would only imagine that being even more prevalent in FAANG!
Recently joined a boutique firm which seems to have much less travel, a better WLB and being an actual person instead of an employee number. Part of me will miss having airline status for better seats and boarding, but that's nothing in the grand scheme of things.
A lot of stress and tiredness that we feel is a reaction to how little we are valued and lack of decent behavior. The current norms are very demotivating.
It’s time to bring back civility, consideration and social norms at work instead of all this ineffective empathy talk. Just rules of polite engagement in a civil society, regardless of what your actual thoughts and opinions are.
Really miss those days when people were not just a number regardless of how little they made and where they were on the totem pole. As an immigrant, I have seen that decline in considerate behavior in USA over the last three decades.
Very well said. So true.
I got off the road at just over 20 years. My kids were 4 and 2 when I started traveling. Both are out of uni now and one is married. I missed way too much.
Last year I did an international transfer to a country that has a better WLB in their DNA. I don't travel anymore and it feels great. My body just couldn't sustain the worsening air travel.
