It means you’d come in as a third year senior associate (aka almost about to be promoted to manager, likely in 1 year).
They usually do this if you’re not coming from a consulting background so it gives you a year to get acclimated to the company and culture.
If you applied for manager and they’re tell you to be a 3rd year associate, I would push back and say you’re ready for manager.
And is manager the equivalent of a case team leader/engagement manager?
Yes it’s is equivalent to team leader/engagement manager. I believe the structure for strategy & is Associate (0-3), Senior Associate (3-6), Manager (6-9/10), SM (9/10-12/13/14), Director (12/13/14-Partner/MD - random timeline).
Note this is a general overview on YOE for each position, it can vary based on what you come in as and how well you perform.
You’ll have control over the team as a Manager but not full control until you are a Senior Manager.
You should hopefully get a good pay bump as well when you are promoted to Manager.
