Depends on how you want to use the points. It just domestic, Southwest by far is the best. The most options in and around each area.
If you want them for international, then United. But honestly you're not going to rack up a meaningful amount of points on United on this route, it's too short and the flights are too cheap.
Source: have done this
Alaska has some good options as well
United. Better redemptions out of SFO.
Southwest has the most flights if you include Oakland, but status doesn’t get you much. AA flies regional jets for the route and uses their satellite terminal in LA, the flight is only an hour. Delta depends which terminal at LAX you go through. One of them is brand new, but the second one is under constant renovation for the next 1-2 years. Can’t speak for United as I haven’t flown them in years. They seem to have a lot of flights but it’s by far the oldest crappiest terminal at LAX.
Delta Shuttle FTW!
SWA will give you most options there. Have a coworker doing the same because atleast SWA has better redemption value. With how short flight is you won’t earn anything worth any value with the big 3
For that short haul go southwest
Check out Jet Blue
If you get Southwest A-list, you can book the cheapest late flight of the day and switch to an earlier flight for free. I use this a lot.
Also, with A-list, you can flex to any airport within region in Bay area. For example, if you fly LAX-SFO but you need to be in East Bay they can flex you to OAK or SJC if there's room. I did this all the time.
That being said, you should also check if you really want to fly into LAX or if Burbank or LGB is better. LA traffic could make it a nightmare if you land on the wrong side of the city.
Delta
Definitely Southwest. 60% of the time, it’s on time every time.
