Accounting profession is begging for more people to get their PhD and teach accounting. But when you Look into it, you realize you make only a tiny tiny stipend for the year. How can someone go from making a decent salary in PA to living off scraps for at least five years? I have a family with two kids, there’s no way I could leave and get a PhD even though I’d love to.

Once I realized that most of the focus was on research instead of teaching is when I lost interest. I have no interest in writing random articles that many don't read but that's where most the pay comes from. The less you're focused on research the less you make

My dad loved to teach and preferred to stay adjunct (it was part time for him) instead of pursuing tenure. He hated the pressure to publish.

I barely got through undergrad & CPA. Can’t imagine a masters in accounting or PHD.

In grad school my tax professor was a part time professor and full time tax attorney. She was lecturing about taxation of non-cash employee benefits and mentioned how our university had a tuition swap agreement with another university in the state. Her daughter was going to the other university (tuition free) and how the other university had a professor whose kid went to my university (tuition free). I then realized the tuition benefit was probably worth more than she was making teaching part time 🙃. I dont think most of my accounting professors had PhDs, just Masters and CPAs Tl/dr: become a professor when your kids are in college for a little extra benefit

Yes! My friends mom was a professor at a Jesuit college that has reciprocity with other Jesuit schools and catholic universities too. Tuition was free and all they had to do was pay for room and board, but all of them became RAs so they basically got a free quality education.

I think you could probably do an accounting phd in 3 years?

Three is reasonable if you’ve settled on a research topic and plan within the first semester and nothing goes off the rails. You’d also likely want to be aligned with a long term study or interest of your sponsor such that you could leverage research already in progress. Four is more reasonable but, depending on the program, you could be working for that forth year and making a salary beyond the stipend.

We have sales people in Canada and the US, the Canadians make 150K CAD and down here it’s 150K USD, the Canadians argue they should be making 30% more than the US colleagues to be equal bc of the exchange! I explain the salary is dependent on the market data for them in Canada, WHERE THEY LIVE, and you can’t compare it to the US employees and the market data down here. Overall they are both in the 75th% for total comp. for their industry. Am I wrong?

Currently at FAANG in a Client Solutions role. I’ve been here for 6 months, have the opportunity to potentially transition to BizOps or Product (in title, work is more implementation focused) in 6 months. Just got a Sales Strategy offer for a tech company but not FAANG. I like the team, pay is equal, and it’s remote with monthly travel. Scared of burning FAANG bridge with potential move out but also dislike my role because I hate sales and want to do strategy work. Thoughts?

Dropping this in a few bowls, sorry if you see it twice. I'm transitioning from teaching 8th grade mathematics at a public school to teaching a 7/8 self-contained classroom at a charter school. Any advice for teaching mixed grade levels or multi subject is appreciated: scheduling, classroom setup, subject order, behavior management, etc. I'm struggling to find my rhythm with only 6 weeks before kids return. Thanks to everyone for your commitment and time, enjoy your summer!

So mentally exhausted with job search. I know times are hard but I thought I chose a safe career. After being burnt out during tax season and then laid off I don't know if this misery will ever end. I am usually not like this, but lately going even through another interview gives me an anxiety attack. How do I overcome this?
