All: I know nothing about big law but am meeting with a big law firm soon to discuss a potential position at one of their smaller offices. Articles online say that they are matching Cravath scale for attorney salaries. My question: if a firm matches Cravath, does that apply to all attorneys at all office locations? Or is it different for attorneys at smaller locations? Thanks friends!

It's worth confirming, because not all firms are the same. But generally, yes.

However, absent some unique circumstances, I would assume you would be coming in as either counsel or partner if you are already acting as GC.

What is the firm? Some pay lockstep Cravath scale in all offices. Others only pay Cravath in “large markets” while paying less in smaller markets. This isn’t necessarily based on office size, but size of the city and what the market rates are in that city.

Like someone else mentioned, Cravath will apply to Associates. Partners, Counsels, and Attorneys who are non-Partner track are almost always off Cravath so the firm can individualize comp. But it should give you some idea about comp.

Salary check. I am currently an in house attorney. 12 YOE. Large company with great coworkers doing regulatory work for the insurance industry. Good work life balance. I live in a high COL city. Out of curiosity and to test the market, I interviewed at a FAANG. Did not get the job, but found out TC was 350k, significantly higher than my TC 230k. I thought I was compensated fairly, but would love to see your thoughts.

Any Florida or Georgia fans around? I am not a fan of either team. but love big rivalries and want a good game.

found a role i’m really interested in and came across a post about it from hiring manager with a “reach out if you’re interested”. I’ve got a few connections to the company - is it better to try to go through someone I’m connected with in a different department and try to get referred, or just jump on the hiring manager’s post and reach out to them cold?

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?
