A lot? Are you mental. European companies were giving this monthly. It’s may seem like a lot until you consider it’s just the second assistance in a year for people that are struggling.
Put your second martini and the keys to your leased BMW down and realize America under Trump did jack for a long time. This is actually too little too late
A family of four you just covered less than a month of expenses.
I read comments talking a ton of different reasons why giving the funding to unemployment agencies was untenable. More time to implement, more time to get money in the hands of people because the system is overwhelmed, and it misses a lot of people adversely affected who may not qualify for unemployment. From your comments OP, it sounds like you want to minimize the waste. Which is a valid perspective. However it’s not one I agree with. I’m happy with more waste if it means more people who need the assistance get it as well

So OP. No clear thesis I can see here - other than you like to argue.
1) total income from a tax return is not a perfect way to calculate need. It is the fast way.
2) for all the pushback I heave not heard a simple approach here to resolve it
3) you can quote PPP which had a program backed by banks but as someone who helped people get the money, it was a disaster and it took months to get funds
So what is your point and gripe? Seems like a lot is just fighting words. You don’t seem to have a real point other that it feels wrong. In a courtroom, that’s fine councilor - in life that’s just time people are not helped
Your move.
More confused that you don’t know 70k is 160k in the Bay Area. And two parents making it is 320k+ in the Bay Area. That’s not a family struggling.
Also confused that you can’t tell that money to a family who hasn’t lost their job at all or had pay cut or hours shortened is not a financial difficulty check, it’s just a flat out bonus.
These bills were not stimulus / they were pandemic relief.
You can’t have “stimulus” when the country is shut down. Stimulus is intended to jumpstart consumer spending after a weakening of their balance sheets (see 2008). There was no such weakening here - asset prices are strong, no home price collapse, no mass unemployment.
This was intended to be a pandemic safety net but the intent and drivers of what we’re doing (both shutdowns and these so called stimuluses) were lost along the way in partisanship.
Savings rate and the glut of cash is higher than its ever been.
If this were a “stimulus” then we should have provided vouchers to restaurants, hotels, and air travel. But that would also require easing of the lockdowns and no way Dems would go for that.
This is pure safety net - no stimulus to be found here.
Big data know what brand tampons I bought yesterday. Technology can easily determine who is hurting from the pandemic. Equitable distribution of stimulus is not unattainable.
They could’ve literally just funded unemployment insurance agencies in states. If someone loses their job or has shorter hours they would report it to the agency and the agency would process that as covid-19 related or not, just like they do every single day outside of Covid context. The direct payment seems more of an attempt to buy votes.
More confused that you apparently think a family with children making a combined $70k is somehow loaded and wouldn’t need assistance in an ongoing pandemic.
🤦🏾♀️
Why would they get unemployment if they are making $70k?
