Get to know as much about your audience as possible beforehand. Rehearse your presentation several times. Become fluent with your messages and speak with confidence! You will be fine.
Practice and practice some more. You can learn this!
Know your content forwards backwards and sideways. We’re not naturally good bs’ers so we need to have the substance to speak confidently. Once you have that down, then work on knowing your audience. Anticipate questions and rehearse your answers (including some version of I don’t know, I’ll get back to you).
I also print the presentation and write out my speaking notes on each slide. Then I run through it a few times, editing notes as I go and eventually I don’t need the notes anymore and the presentation starts to sound natural.
During the presentation, take deep breaths. I used to get so nervous my heart would be beating so fast like I’m working out and I would literally turn red and sound out of breath. Talk slower and louder than you think you need to. Find a friendly face and make eye contact.
It’s really time consuming and I only do it now for big presentations but I’ve found it very helpful when I was starting out. Good luck! It gets easier!
Good point. I’d say use the friendly face as an anchor to come back to when you get flustered rather than engaging in a staring contest.
Also, don’t worry about being perfect. I used to get feedback about “um” and other filler words I use, like after a presentation my manager would tell me he counted 16 um’s and I’d be like really dude? I was trying not to die, but thanks. Work on one thing at a time. I eventually got rid of the filler words but it takes time.
Rehearsing can’t be stated enough.
Presentation should have one single core message that is supported by 3+/- supporting elements.
If you tie everything to the main message as you go it will flow well.
