Mid size is still better pay than government, in my experience, but obviously the WLB may not be. My friends with 5-10 YOE in government make between 120 and 150ish. What practice area are you looking at? My firm is always looking. Feel free to DM.
You may be able to negotiate a sign on bonus, too. Some places have been having trouble hiring quality candidates.
The average pay is around $60k-$100k in small firms and around $80k-$150k in mid-size firms. But with your yoe, I think you can aim for the max salary or even ask for a higher base.
Interesting. I’ve done some government work previously and it seems like, depending on classification, I could be making $140-180K for state or probably the higher end of that range for federal. I guess I was expecting that in a big city, firms would pay more. Not sure why anyone would choose private practice (BL excluded) over government in a place like CA where they pay so much. I guess it’s dreams of partnership?
