Any insight into the likelihood of out-of-state Big Law Labor & Employment attorneys being able to lateral to Big Law or in-house positions in San Diego? I have worked on some California cases but realize L&E in California is its own beast and would expect a class cut at firms. However, more interested in anecdotes of whether this is feasible without currently being licensed in California, as most firm postings say current CA license is required. Continued in comments.

‘13 L&E attorney at a small firm in San Diego - I can’t speak to big law or in house, but San Diego loves its locals and I had a rough time finding a position as someone who did not grow up here or go to school here. The fact you have strong ties to the area will help!!

California L&E is, as you said, its own beast and I would think your anticipated class cut would happen at firms. For in-house, it probably depends on the company and the role - they might care more about a lack of California experience in general, not necessarily in a particular practice area.

Thanks!

Continued: I also know California allows out-of-state attorneys to register as in-house counsel without taking the CA bar, so I’m curious if there are certain companies or industries in San Diego that are known to be more open to an out-of-state L&E attorney. I’m not opposed to taking the CA bar if needed, but it would be difficult to do so while at my current firm without tipping them off that I’m considering a move.

Class of 2013 with strong San Diego ties. Thanks all!

I have a promising interview at a relatively large law firm in my area (+100 attorneys) next week. The position is for a transactional role in their real estate practice group, and they are seeking someone with at least 2 YOE. I have a bit over 7 YOE with a strong real estate/commercial lit. background. Over the past two years in my current position, I've been doing a lot more transactional work. The split is around 50% transactional and 50% lit.
