Any recommendations for a good, free budgeting tool and any tips for paying off credit card debt? Mint isn't doing it for me and I have some debt I need to wipe out

Create your own excel spreadsheet. They actual had some pretty decent templates if you don't want to make it from scratch.

Keep it simple. Pencil and paper. If you get fancy or technical, you'll lose context or give up. Start with a plan. Here's a good one: https://www.daveramsey.com/baby-steps. Many people balk at step two because it doesn't make mathematical sense (pay smallest balance first, instead of highest interest rate). The problem most people have with debt isn't mathematical (except for the disconnect between inflow and outflow). It's psychological.

Check out Reddit r/personalfinance some people recommend YNAB (you need a budget), there's also a couple good spreadsheet templates you can use.

What was the problem with Mint? I'm about to start using it so just curious.

Buy less stuff. You dont need it.

Thanks, everyone!

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

I racked up about $20k in credit card debt due to a confluence of things happening at once (move, school expenses , etc ). I have a fair amount of paper assets but not a much free cash. Assets are down a decent amount with the current market cycle and I’d prefer not to sell them to cover the debt , although they easily could. Any suggestions how to handle the credit card debt without racking up tons of ongoing card interest?

should I take the offer if the pay is the same?
