They are beneficial for eating bugs and grubs. However, the raw manure can burn & damage plants, not to mention that it contains pathogens that can be directly transferred to any vegetable plants or people. If you can gather up and properly compost the manure, it will be good for the garden.
Another thing to consider is the proximity of the garden to your house, as areas populated by chickens can smell pretty bad.

There are some ducks that are actually better. Lay more eggs, eat more bugs, aren't as unhinged and feral as chickens. Indian runner ducks.

Any advice on keeping the smell down. I heard deep litter method and lots of ventilation helps?
In my experience they peck at most plants if you're not careful. They pecked all our squash one summer 🤣🫠
