Do you have the technical know-how? The biggest hurdle for most AEs transitioning to SEs will be technical knowledge. Some SEs at some companies are a little less technical, but usually those SEs move into Sales as career growth, which doesn’t sound like something you will want to do. So, you may be stuck at a mid-low level SE for quite some time while you focus on gaining technical skills and some coding knowledge.
Yeah, definitely much more comfortable with the technical know-how inside of our product (HR specific) and that space as a whole. I’ve been working with our current SE who is transitioning out of the org though our conversation have been more narrowly focused on the HR domain and our product vs SE/SC generally speaking (though completely understand the nuances of each organization needs for these specific roles)
I would certainly get those technical chops up and a certification or 2 would help in demonstrating that. Making the transition internally where you have some domain / industry knowledge can help. If you have some deeper experience selling into a certain vertical, that can be useful especially for some areas of SaaS. As an example, SEs that sell back office financial applications are more valuable for their knowledge of accounting and their data manipulation skills rather than their ability to write applications. Alternatively, SEs that sell IT ops monitoring software are probably former SysAdmins or DevOps people who have ample depth in that skillset. The technical demands vary greatly
