Well at least they brought us pizza and snacks to the gate. Bro move by delta.
There are quite a few storm bands in the vicinity. Summer weather can contain hail, microbursts, and differential temperatures that can stall or damage the structure of a plane. ATC has to establish no-fly windows where weather may be severe enough to cause an accident and direct air traffic around these spots so it causes delays. Several aviation incidents with heavy loss of life made these regulations what they are today. ✈️
Also, there's a preference within ATC towards holding flights at their origin rather than having them circle or divert. You're better off off the plane than on the plane in this case 😊
Check the FAA site.
Due to WX / TSTMS and WEATHER / THUNDERSTORMS, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving La Guardia Airport, New York, NY (LGA). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 2 hours and 59 minutes. To see if you may be affected, select your departure airport and check "Delays by Destination".
Delays by Destination:
Due to WEATHER / THUNDERSTORMS, departure traffic destined to Newark International Airport, Newark, NJ (EWR) is currently experiencing delays averaging 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Due to WX / TSTMS, departure traffic destined to John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK) is currently experiencing delays averaging 2 hours and 42 minutes.
Look up delta flight 191 and you'll be thankful your flight delayed for your safely.
I figured that ny airports were on lockdown or something as a result of the awfulness in istanbul. Glad i was wrong
I always check the FAA site before heading from the airport for whatever city I'm departing from. It will let you know what ground delays you have there and also what destination-specific delays are in effect. Super useful, and it gives you context for some delays that seem to be otherwise random. Just google "FAA" and whatever the code is for your departure airport.
