I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Yes. All the time. Write them down in your notes app on your phone.

I think it’s better if you talk to someone in strategy and account department for different accounts and you ask them what are issues (business wise) that they have and they’d like to solve. Then, you ideate against that. Otherwise you are in path of wasting time and frustration because the chances of random ideas come to life are very very small.
I meant ideas outside of work- so not for current clients or agencies I work with. I don’t have a lot of big thinking projects in my portfolio because the places i’ve worked, the clients would ask for and pay for these ideas when they didn’t have any budget secured. SO they were never made. That’s all fine. I’m wondering if it’s worth mocking some of my ideas up and including them in my portfolio anyways….I freelance also for more context.
You sound young and naive, so yes write down those ideas, mock them up if you have the time, and keep showing them but don’t add them to your book unless they sell. Also don’t get your hopes up it’ll turn into anything other than a nod of respect/admiration from your CD if you’re even lucky enough to get that.
I keep them in a Google doc so I don’t keep thinking I have to remember them. Never done anything with them other than text some of the funny ones to friends.

Work affects all of us, I guess.
This was great until I found myself not able to turn it off, and doing it during vacation and time with family, and my abundance of ideas never got made anyways. Exhausting. CCO kept telling me to wait for a brief.
Thanks for replying, it’s helpful to know other people are doing this and it’s actually useful - and I intend to fully enjoy the pool bar next time I get a vacation hahah 🍻

Have some kids and I guarantee your brain will turn to mush. Don’t ask me how I know.
I think there’s grey area of who technically owns the idea if you’ve presented them and they weren’t bought. Slash if it’s a really cool idea you might want to keep in your back pocket for future. But if you think you’re book needs more work I’d mock-up an idea you haven’t presented to a client and think is a good one
