Anyone else who recently started struggling to get hours? Team seems very busy, but no one gives me work even when I reach out. Not worried about being fired (not yet, anyway), but I’d really like to have more than 3-4 billable hours a day…

Is it possible they are trying to protect you from burnout unbeknownst to you? Did you have crazy hours last month or recently?

like

When I asked for work, I kept getting no traction and then nonbillable work.

It’s probably because of the December craziness. If you’re new, chances are that the partners don’t know what they can pass off to you and trust you to handle. They don’t have time to teach you how things work around there either right now. Don’t worry about it. It’s just a short and awkward period of time.

Having the same situation.

Same situation here. I found out they won’t give billable work unless you do more non billable work.

Things are a bit slower now than they were at any time since March 2020. Things often slow down or otherwise get weird in mid-December. Started a little earlier this year.

like

Are you in a large surplus of hrs for the year?

Nope

I think this may be a work style/product preference. Are you new to the group?

Partners tend to use their go-to associates, it will just take some time

like

Seems like one of the senior associates gets deals sent to him directly and he hoards the work. I’ve asked if he needs help and he says no. I don’t think there’s much else I can do except tell the partner. I will try to give it a few months to see if this changes.

Or spend the next year building your own relationships at your new firm so that partners send you work directly because they want to.

Hard to do so when the work isn’t coming to me and the other associate is the middleman for everything. For clarification, I’m not a corporate associate. I’m in a specialty group, so we don’t really interact with corporate partners outside of them giving us deal docs.

When we’re all comparing/complaining about hours at the end of the year are we including pro bono hours in that total? I’m nearing 2050 billables for the year but I have another 500 pro bono hours that should be added on. At the same time, I keep hearing about all these people straight billing 2,400+. Trying to determine if I should’ve tried to pick up more billable work to stay in the middle of the pack (i.e. not interested in partnership, just trying not to get canned).

Im a third year associate and I’m frequently asked to give presentations (on new case law, legislation, ect.) during a weekly meeting for my section. There’s a first year associate and a law clerk in my section who are never asked to present. Should I push back on this? Would it look bad if I delegate some of the work to the others? I spend a lot of non billable time prepping for these presentations...it seems unfair that I’m the only one who has to do them.

Guys, how are you? I'm looking for some help. I recently started working for a new company. I've been reaching out to managers, directors, seniors, and the Resource Manager since Day 1 in order to get placed on projects. When I get on a call today I find out that all of my coworkers who started with me have billable hours of at least 40 hours per week. Meanwhile, I have yet to reach that number of hours yet. So, what should I do now? I've literally done my part to get staffed in projects.

Our school has a very diverse population, but our district and building don’t embrace it very well, so I decided to start in my own classroom. I talked to my kids about family origins and then surprised them with a flag from each country of origin. Now when they walk in there is a small representation of who they are. It also sparks conversation about where the different flags are from and shows students just how diverse we all are. So far the kids love it and we’ve had some great conversations.
