I recently got a verbal offer from KPMG strategy. Is that more prestigious than like, most other firms? Like, I know MBB is done with recruiting; I feel like below MBB for name recognition is the Big 4 and other firms aren’t as reputable. I’m trying to decide whether or not I should interview and apply to other firms or just take this one (assuming a written offer ever comes along). Also, I prioritize work culture and exit opportunities over salary, but don’t want to be paid below poverty line.

I have as someone who was supporting partners building a practice. A few things to keep in mind:
- you need strong allies/partners to gtm with
- easier to start with existing client relationships vs completely new
- you need to be more hands-on building sales/project collateral, in addition to just selling
- have a clear plan of attack for the next 18 months (usually the ramp/allowance time before #s matter)
The most important is #1. It will be very difficult doing this alone and the main driver of success I’ve seen is how well your service offering integrates with existing service offerings, and how easily partners can bring you in
It worked well twice, and didn’t work well once. The primary factors for it not working well:
- down market
- service offering not integrating well into existing services (partners were selling the work for free and/or greatly reduced margin, ie. they didn’t play nicely)
Yes 18 months. Went from md to partner
Mine is still a WIP. I started to build a practice when I was a Manager. It was around a completely new, untested and innovative offering. Had a couple of Partners who believed in it strongly and backed me up all the way (still do), we made a business case and received funding etc.
It took me way longer to fully establish since the first 1-2 years focused on standing up solutions and services with Firm’s investment with no significant revenue, and the last 2-3 years since then has seen that book grow substantially into a viable (growing + profitable) business and break-even.
It has been the most intense period for me professionally but I have loved every bit of it and grateful for the absolutely fantastic team I have, and leadership’s trust and commitment.
I was doing my regular tech consulting work, and this was a side-of-the-desk initiative that I led and eventually gathered enough steam and attention. It wasn’t easy getting myself out of my client commitments to focus on this full time, effectively going from full utilisation-revenue generating resource to an investment resource. I am just lucky that I had Partners that believed in it as much I did.
Yes. 18 months. Direct admittance to start the gig.
This is me. DM me for details, I’m several years into the journey…
