Anyone have insight on the expert path vs. generalist path at McKinsey? I am interviewing for a senior role in the expert path and would like to know what the differences are Day to day and long term.

Thanks for all the info! Anyone know if it is possible to switch into the generalist path from the expert path if so desired down the line?

like

Doable but tough. You most likely need to switch by the time you get to EM/AP level. Ideally EM, else its hard to branch out. One easy way to branch out is to find a client outside of your practice and have some solid supporters from that practiceZ

Expert partners are capped out at junior partner by convention/informal policy. I.e., no one has ever made Director and the firm feels that is appropriate treatment for the track. There could be someone in the future that makes it over that hurdle, but it is unlikely, because the firm looks for different things in that track vs the senior partner track.

like

Day to day: Less crazy hours, more hands on work, long term engagements (as compared to generalist path)

Long term: don't know, the expert path hasn't been around / mainstream for long enough

Is the expert path non-partner track?

Nope, there are a good number of expert partners. It actually seems like a pretty good gig assuming two things. 1 you have something about which you're passionate and in which you are truly an expert. 2 you're good enough at it that teams want you around (you're expensive, and utilization matters)

So this is not legacy mckinsey?

Ey to mckinsey? There's hope

Most important difference on expert path is you top out at partner -- can't make the promotion to senior partner (Director). But top of junior partner band is still a very very nice gig. You still are "up or out", but they call it "grow or go" (ie, you gotta keep improving your skills and broadening your appeal)

ATK1 I've seen the same for most Expert Partners but don't know why they top out at Partner? Anyone knows why they cant make senior partner?

Very tough
