Are you both working? How long is your paternity leave? My wife and I didn't take turns per se, but I took on diaper changes at night (and frequently during the day). Other than that, I rarely did anything at night. During the day I'd often hold the little one and let her sleep (baby snuggles are the best), giving my wife nap time and some time to herself. Since my wife had an episiotomy, they recommended at least 2 weeks off her feet. I did the shopping, cooking, etc, during that time knowing that she would take on the majority of infant care after I returned to work (only had 2 weeks at the time). I still changed night diapers after going back to work, but that was the majority of my childcare (my wife nursed). We eventually settled into a 7:30p bedtime for the baby, and she usually only woke up once at 12-1 for a feed (yeah, I know - not typical for a newborn). So it wasn't terrible for my wife. That said, we had an easy baby, so I'm expecting next one will be a terror :D
Nice write up DD1 :) My wife and I took turns feeding and changing diapers alternating every 2 feedings (~ 4-5 hours). This way we both could get at least one decent rest a day.
Night feedings:
- 1 bottle so wife can skip 1 feeding; for others...
- You grab screaming kid, change diaper. Do this first while they’re pissed anyways. Toss baby on mama for a dream feed (takes practice; stay with it). You cat nap during feed. Wife elbow you in ribs; you rock milk groggy baby back down.
Is she nursing? You could have her pump one bottle a day, so could potentially get your wife a 5-6 hour stretch.
Also Google "awake times" make sure you're ensuring your child isn't over tired during the day (don't keep them up thinking they'll sleep longer), monitoring awake times will help you get longer stretches sooner.
Rethink consulting.
^ Spoken like a principal
For both of our kids, my wife would wake to do the feed, then I’d do the diaper and such and we’d go back to sleep. I mean, we lost some sleep but it wasn’t that bad. Both my kids got to 4-5 hour stretches relatively quickly. It’s so different for every kid... or so I hear.
How new of a newborn? The first few weeks were survival mode. Almost 3 months and recently we've been putting him down at 7pm, he wakes up to eat at 10 and usually goes another 5 to 6 hours.
My wife and I used to take turns..shut ourselves up in a different room
Whatever ATK1 said..my wife and I were and are still EY..life has been hell. Career destroyed (at least mine). At least one of u have to take a back step
Put an adult need in the baby's room. One adult sleeps in the baby's room. The other sleeps in your normal need so you can get a good night sleep.
Hire a night nurse for first 10weeks or so
Lol. Yeah. I figured do title for this post not company name. Now if only you knew how little I paid you would be hailing me for consultant of the year
P1 how little did you pay?
I did the 9-2am shift... Worked while kids slept and then crashed. I also covered 6-7:45am in case there was late night activity and a few extra hours of sleep. Even still, she did not appreciate it so don't know that's the best solution. It's an option though in case your wife is on board.
