I mean they always say that getting a job when you're currently employed is a little bit easier but I think SO many people have been laid off the last few years that it didn't impact my job search. Everyone is understanding and doesn't think about it reflecting you personally
It seemed a little easier to get a job when I was employed vs. laid off, but that might have just been due to the state of the job market. In general, I don't think it's a huge hindrance. Layoffs are common and I think most hiring managers understand they're more of a reflection on the company than on you as a candidate.
It was very easy getting my first job out of college. Offer already lined up before I even graduated.
But it was extremely, extremely difficult getting my second job after my layoff. It took me 13 months and nearly 600 applications and many interviews to land where I’m at
Rising Star
I've received a wide variety of reactions after being laid off. Some recruiters treated it like a scarlet letter, assuming that if you were let go it must have been for some reason. Others didn't care, they accept that things are sometimes out of your control.
As someone who has done hiring and as someone who has been laid off, it's not great.
People who are already employed will take priority over those who are unemployed. That's the reality.
The term I've used for 15 years is "reduction in force" which is a term that an HR professional told me to use. I then mention that my reviews were all very good or excellent, which reinforces the idea that me losing my job was a business decision and not related to my performance.
I have also taken temporary roles to that I have employment continuity.
I was laid off due to company being acquired. It didn’t impact my next two jobs at all. In fact, I don’t even mention it. No one ever asks either.
🤷🏻
I think being laid off really just impacted me and how I had to look at things after that. I don’t feel like it really changed much with my next job prospects. Agree that it wasn’t a huge topic of conversation and they were more interested in other things.
I put it in my resume as the end of a contract. It reality that’s all it is. No problem
All companies go through contractions, due to market forces, the availability of credit, etc. It's all in how you tell the story. It also helps if you have a story to tell about what you are doing in the gap - taking classes, assessing other career options, etc.
My contract just abruptly ended in 2021 when I told my dept director that I would not succumb to the Covid 19 vaccination thread.
Everything works against me since then when I looked for another job.
It's common for the last 5 years to hear the word "layoffs" . Hiring managers should understand that. Unless it's because of low performance. (That's a whole other subject for discussion elsewhere here).
Basically, life has no control group. No way to compare. There are always differences in the economy and job market from one job search to another. And really, they can tell from the end date on your resume for your most recent job that you are out of work, unless you leave it like you are still there. If they really care you were laid off, you will likely never hear from them and will never know. I think it somewhat depends on what people have heard about the company that laid you off. When a company is laying a lot of people off, employers get suspicious even of employees from there who WEREN’T part of the layoffs. I have decided job hunting is a lot like online dating. The employers are trying to mind read “red flags” that no one has ever tested to see if they really mean anything at all about the candidate.

All this quantification and metrics are used to cover their ass when they hire someone bad. It is always a gamble. You need to do half hour personality tests now. It is literal horoscope BS.
I was let go on 5 feb 2024 and did not land a job until Nov 11 2024. On the sparse interviews I had; the why I was not working did not really come up in conversation. it may or may not have impacted the decisions but will never know
Years ago.
Came out of nowhere. Messed with my head but maybe me better once I got my head straight.
Landed a more senior position with more pay with a company with a better culture.
Just keep going and work hard on your mental health, it will get better.
