Are BigLaw hours in London really that bad? Would an MC firm be a safer option as a foreign qualified lawyer looking to make a move.

Depends on the firm; some are and some are not. I’m at a BigLaw firm and working a lot less than I did at MC - but pattern would have been reversed at other firms. I don’t think you can generalise.

Depends on what firm, what practice area, and what your definition of bad is. Litigation seems to be more civilised than transactional work, but we still have a low-end bilking target of 2100 hrs/year, so while the office is almost empty by 10pm each night, people are putting the hours in.

Would you be okay being the first non-white hire at a small agency? Like they are making their first effort to bring diversity in (making it clear that you are not just a diversity hire), but you are going to be alone in a sea of white faces. I personally don’t know how to feel about it but I’d love to hear other opinions.

I'm moving from Scotland to London in September, looking to buy a flat, what are some nice / ok areas within 45 minute commute of Paddington?

Looking around the £300-£350k mark.

Leaving my (London, big US) firm; HR has sent me various confirmations they are asking me to sign “before my last day”: I haven’t taken any docs, am aware of my regulatory obligations, don’t have any claims against the firm, have returned everything I need to return etc etc etc. This feels like an obvious try-on: the firm isn’t paying me anything to sign, my reg obligations are unaffected by it etc. How do others manage these? Just walk out on last day?

London folk, question for you: do firms and offices in London not recruit candidates directly? What are peoples opinions on work from home? It seems to be an unpopular opinion but as a junior I despise it. I work 3 feet from my bed, I find the barriers of a phone/email between me and a senior to add a huge amount of stress to my life and I think it’s stunting my career development at my firm because I can’t build relationships as effectively. I’ve never at all had mental health issues before but now am really starting to feel burnt out and anxious most of the time. What do you think?

Any thoughts on Sidley's London office? How sharp elbowed are the associates and how much do partners genuinely try and help you develop a career? Bonus points if you can provide insight on how the corporate and finance departments work with specialists on transactional matters. As a final ask, are they genuinely into D&I and flexible working efforts or is this predominantly lip service? Thanks in advance!
