You’re at a bad firm. Especially post covid, sick days are honored without question at my firm.
My firm lets me stay home, take time off as I need, and work from home as I see fit. This is accounting, not medicine. Nobody is going to die if we take time off.
A director I worked with used to say this all the time. “We’re not saving lives guys”
Sick days = you’re still working but at home

Unlimited sick time - you just need to make up the work if there’s a deadline. We are adults right?
Gen Z does not act like adults, that’s the problem
Our principals say if you don’t advocate for yourself the PA profession will eat you up. Advocate for yourself and set boundaries. No one’s forcing you to and if they are switch firms
Besides it being the human response to just let someone be sick and recover, it’s also not in the firm’s best interest for someone to work sick. The productivity working while sick is not worth it to both the firm and the client in the long run.
Absolutely they're a thing. Many firms have unlimited sick days.
PCAOB does not have sick days. You'll have to use PTO.
Not as an associate but as a senior associate, if you are sick but have a deadline, it gets you out of meetings but does not get you out of work (as someone who worked Fourth of July weekend because i had covid the week before)
How did you read that and think they “took sick time”?
Yes, sick days are a thing and that working while sick is not the expectation.
I’ve never taken a “sick day” but it’s insane to me that even while working from home the people that work under me can fully “call out sick” and not even make a half hour meeting they scheduled.
Just because you haven’t been severely sick doesn’t mean you won’t be in the future. I have not taken sick days until later in my career too. Take life as it comes to you, not as you wish it came to you.
We were at a client site for a sell-side deal and one of the team members was wheezing the entire time. Partner made him stay and I was forced to sit right next to him (no other seats available). Only time I've ever experienced that and it was the most toxic partner I've ever worked with.
If you're sick, wfh. If you're super sick, don't work. It's simple,
This isn’t a PA issue. Its more of a US as a whole issue with the lack of labor laws
Assume you're from the states? Much different in the UK. Outside of the probation period I don't know of any serious company without a paid sick leave policy.
We have paid sick leave in the U.S. they’re discussing actual expectations about being expected to work when sick. We have a PTO program and it’s combined vacation and sick or whatever you need it for
Up to you if you want to work while sick. I have never worked while sick. Sh!t gets done when it gets done.
IDK what firm you work for, but the one I work for gives us 120 hours min of PTO, we are free to use as we want, as long as its not "peak" tax season. We can still take a day here or there during that tho. I would start looking for another firm to work at.
It definitely exists - the expectation/culture you're referring to differs between teams. Some respect sick/personal time, some don't, it just depends who you work for.
Sick days are not "a thing" in the American workplace period.

Thanks, Christopher.

lol I got covid last year and my boss acted like she was doing me a favor “letting me” wfh. She kept saying passive aggressive things like “I trust you to manage your workload at home.” So bizarre.
More like you’d push through even if your health is declining because there’s an up and coming person with no responsibilities that can work a lot harder.
Sick means I can still work from my bed unfortunately
You can take as many sick days as you want; however, nobody does your work while you’re away and it, along with any deadlines, will still be there (and more) when you get back. It’s just easier to work from home while you’re sick, assuming you’re able.
