You’re at a bad firm. Especially post covid, sick days are honored without question at my firm.
My firm lets me stay home, take time off as I need, and work from home as I see fit. This is accounting, not medicine. Nobody is going to die if we take time off.
A director I worked with used to say this all the time. “We’re not saving lives guys”
I haven’t been sick since 2019 so at my last firm I used them for mental health/fun days because they wouldn’t approve my PTO
I think most places are like that, expectations are ridiculous. I have worked many Holidays, I worked on Easter alone so I could get caught up on the work load. Appreciation goes a long way however, most places I have experienced doesn’t care how much you do. I will say the more you push yourself to do the more is expected from you unfortunately.
I’ve been in PA for 20 years and never take a sick day. However, I cannot recall ever being sick
Easy there, Superman.
Sick days aren't a thing in accounting period. Those books don't close themselves!
Everything changed after the pandemic. If someone is sick they need to be allowed to take sick days. If you start feeling better you should be able to work from home until you are fully recovered.
Standard is one week sick at all the firms I have been in. They let me take it during busy season. I just got a new job where I get 3 weeks off plus 1 week sick. You just need to find the right place.
I had to work when I had Covid…

Many firms have gone to either a certain amount of PTO accruals or unlimited PTO. In that case they don’t have specified sick days. One just uses PTO. If you’re sick, you just use it. If you want vacation they ask that you request the time.
I work for a large firm with multiple offices in the US and abroad. The policy is the same for staff as it Is for partners. They ARE great to reassign work as needed in the event of illness.
Could not be happier.
Sick days went away twenty five years ago when PTO was invented.
