Are the big 4 firms very different from Accenture? (culture, learning/growth opportunities, work methods)

Same 💩 different toilet. I've worked at D, Acn, and and am currently a director at K. Don't get caught up. It's all about the teams you work for and with.

likesmarthelpful

It’s funny how EY thinks Accenture is all about IT. It’s the same as saying EY is about accounting.

To answer the question, all firms (Deloitte, PWC, IBM, ACN,EY, KPMG) are moving towards similar service offerings to remain relevant in the market. Their processes may be different but in terms of methodologies they are pretty much the same (potato-potato). This is the reason why often these firms compete on the same opportunities.

EY1, lol. You identify the issue and make Accenture do it. Very cute 😂

like

Made the move from ACN to D. Biggest difference for me was going from a publicly offered firm to a private partnership

like

I’ve never worked in IT. Run a portfolio and been promoted several times. Guess we are more than IT. Read the earnings report to learn who is doing what

like

Every person is different

likefunny

@OP, few things I noticed are different: Accenture you had to network with at least a few MDs to make sure you are covered for promo etc., but D you can latch on to one part we and ride their coat tail. This means promo and comp decisions at ACN is based on group decision, whereas D it’s one person. If they like you you are golden, if not, well...tough luck.

Also, the culture at D is partner and practice dependent, it’s essentially like a series of small businesses operating under one umbrella. So, your partner is operating with near term P&L goals and doesn’t always have a long game in plan.

Collaboration is shit at D bc partners are motivated to protect and prioritize their own practice. So getting stuff shared/sent to you is not always easy.

Cross border staffing and collab is nearly impossible with all the paperwork and revenue share model in play.

Since diff partners have diff standards, you’ll notice a greater disparity in skill sets across teams and groups.

I’ve worked at McK, D, Acn. McK is a little different as they are MBB and those 3 firms are core strategy and a slightly different service offering.

D and Acn are quite similar in the work they take on. Actually I’ve yet to find a single difference. Acn is definitely not about IT as I’ve not done a single IT project to date.

I agree it’s all about teams.

EY1 - you said your statement with such conviction, but are completely wrong on the facts and are likely not speaking from experience or any credible source of knowledge. I hope your clients don’t get the same degree of #fakenews from you

like

When the client faces an issue, we usually identify it (of course having the business & IT knowledge ) and we make accenture do it usually . From my personal experience

like

I agree that all consulting firms are becoming for full service but how they go about that is completely different.

The big 4 gave a long history in the audit and tax space. Im that space differentiating factor are far and few in between so the firms took to differentiating themselves along personality since they are basically offering a commoditized product where you are following a well established checklist.

While everyone talks about acn is all about IT delivery they are really more about executing. At the end of the day you either solved the clients problem or you didnt.

This is different than the big 4 where at the end of the day you gave the client yet another report that follows ISO, NIST, COBIT, ITIL or another checklist.

Basically if you are acn...you can actually deliver real world changes.

If you are going to move...go to deloitte. They are the closest to acn in their go to market strategy and your skills will be easily integrated.

like

Biggest difference from my perspective is the maturity of the client penetration- the b4 do not have the talent in client management that ACN does. The infrastructure at ACN around management is light years better as well

like

D2 and OP. I imagine things such as expenses and bonuses are thought of differently.. At Accenture we are responsible to deliver shareholder value whereas the partnership would be the focus at D. I feel a lot of the hoops that we have to jump through at Accenture might not be there at D. Curious to hear the partnership perspective..

like

Oh! And forgot about the best part of the big 4: independence...basically on an yearly basis you have to do detailed reporting and recording of the financial interests you and your immediate family (yup, including the SO that lives with you) own so Uncle D can make sure they’re compliant and there are no conflicts of interest between their employees and the firms they audit

likehelpful

Yes . In terms of Consulting, accenture is IT oriented but big 4 is more business oriented . We don’t care T codes like Accenture’s do

like

Dont forget all the risk hoops you have to go through in order get contracts signed, get new clients, etc. And holy hell...i forgot about all the end of project documentation. Awful

like

I think all of our firms have awesome capabilities and we compete well against each other. We do have niche plays and some areas where others are stronger than others. However, all great firms, with amazing people, and something to be proud of. Heck... they even made an exclusive app for us!

I was probably a little harsh on EY1 as I read his post to be a little flawed. No harm intended

like

Every firm is different

@D2: how does it make a difference in your day-to-day experience ?

^ these are my personal observations, I’m sure others will have diff opinions

A3 - I read EY1s comment as Ey knows how to win the $100k assessment and ACN knows how to win the $20M design/build following it. which sadly is kinda true - we’re great at finishing 2nd to you guys

New fish looking for career guidance.

I'm a corporate recruiter with 3 years of experience. Finishing my degree in HRM 5/2022. I'm thinking of getting my SHRM -CP shortly after graduation.

I'm not sure of where to go after that, but I doubt I will stick with recruiting or my current firm.

Has anyone here started off in recruiting and branched out to other HR functions? Do you like your new role? Do you wish you stuck with recruiting?

So I say this with complete humility and an understanding that this is a fortunate-ish situation to be in. I’m in a position where I am tied to nothing, I have no children, spouse, or house. My job, which I’ve loved until some recent significant leadership changes, is sucking the life out of me and I think it may be time for a change. Because I am able to “pick up and go” I’m open to opportunities and locations. I’ve never worked with a recruiter but was hoping I could get some recommendations!
