As a junior, how do you deal with a mid-level who goes MIA for hours during time sensitive matters and leaves you trying to figure out what to do? Edit: this isn’t a one time thing either. I’ve now worked on multiple deals with this person and I find it incredibly rude and stressful.

Lie to myself and empathize, thinking that the person has probably dipped to cry or have a panic attack so do what I can because life happens to everyone.

Are you sure it's time sensitive?

Copy the partner

Figure it out, of course

Have you tried talking to the mid level? I drop for a few hours every day during bedtime routine, but usually I check in with my junior before about next steps if there is anything time pressing. You may just need to manage up.

like

A text message usually gets through to someone in crunch time. I’d recommend that next time if you can’t figure it out yourself.

like

Loop them into whatever email chain people are chasing for things on and say the X is with associate Y

Have you considered the mid level is handling other aspects of the transaction or other matters? Are you certain they didn't give you an artificial deadline? Odds are the work is being submitted to them anyways, so if they're not responding to questions about it, then it's a good sign that it isn't actually time sensitive or they won't be able to review / pass along what's being submitted. Unless they really are truly checked out during crunch time, and are passing the buck to you, in which case the partner definitely needs to be copied, but do so very delicately, and only after attempting to connect with said mid level again.

Second the others. As a mid year on transactions, i get roped into so many other aspects while the junior handles diligence and stuff. I’m still always responsive if they chat me but i ignore for juniors who, even after i gave them thorough instructions, expect me to spoon feed them and attend to their hot mess questions 24/7 as if i have to babysit them all the time

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time
