Sick days are paid. However catch is if you take more than 5 in a row, it becomes short term disability and you need to work with the Leave management team to claim insurance. You can take sick days as paid time off in smaller chunks than 5 days.
You might want to check back with your HR. I am on short term disability right now and what I said was told to me exactly by HR and also leave management team regarding company policy. Also when you were out you were not sick so it is not sick leave it is classified as care. If you are not sick you are obviously not eligible for STD.
