Asking for Advice: For those of you who love negotiating, please share your tips! I am getting ready to negotiate for a FSC position where one is leaving, but they are also opening a second position, so I am worried there will be less of a budget. I know someone who held the same position at the company in the past and started at $75,000, but they think I could ask for as much as $80,000 because I am coming in with different experience and education background. Thanks in advance!

A good rule of thumb is to do what you can to make sure your number is reasonable. As long as you don't come off as unserious you'll be well positioned. There's a lot of talk about how the job market is bad so companies feel emboldened to lowball people. But if you're confident the 80K is a serious number, go with that.

Go into it with confidence and with the knowledge that your counter is justified and reasonable!

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!
