I’m the latter. It blows and does not get much better as I get more senior
Depends on firm, time of year, and practice. I think specialists and litigators tend to have more stable hours. Transactional can be full “on” or “off”. As a transactional lawyer, I’ve had >90h weeks and ~20h weeks where the bulk of the 20 hours was in 1 day or over the weekend. Makes it hard to make social plans.
2000. Had some weekends off here and there when I first started. Hours just get worse as you get more senior…so no WLB.
In lit., been very strategic about taking work and cultivating streams where I have more control over my schedule.
I target 2k a year (hair above firm minimum, but at my firm a decent number of associates fall below minimum). I try to really buckle down mon.-thur. but I'm usually able to have laid backish Fridays and rarely work weekends.
I lateralled so I avoided picking up some behaviors I think big law breeds into you that makes work take longer.
However if I wanted to stay and make a hard partnership push my hours would need to increase for at least a few years during that push. That's not really the plan so I don't worry about it.
TLDR - hours aren't that bad but it takes some effort and luck to get that way.
1800 target. I have a life.

No
No min. requirement, the goal is 1800.
I have great WLB but I am also not going to hit the goal on billables. I’ve had periods where I was slammed and my WLB was crap, I’ve had slow periods and balanced periods as well. If pro bono was included, I would have surpassed the goal - I got staffed to an insane pro bono matter that took hundreds of hours.

Our NYC office doesn’t have different billable requirements than the rest of the firm. I’m in M&A - generally during my very busy periods I’m doing more like 10-12 every day consistently with 14 or 16 being a once in a while insane day. During my non busy periods it’s 6-8 or sometimes less with free weekends
2000 and my work/life balance has been fine except for 2020-2021 when everyone was quarantined during COVID and I was getting nonstop emails and calls from both partners and clients at all hours and was expected to always be available.
