I loved my job so much. I had good relationships with the partners I worked with. I am currently in-house but would love to go back to private practice (big law, I have done a small firm, and it was not for me). If anyone has experienced this- would love to learn about how you navigated this.
Unfortunately your salary is closely adhered to the value you bring to the firm. As a benchmark, if I switch practice groups, I’ll ask for below market as a way to market my “less than average” skill set with the grace period I need to transition into the firm. Later on, I’ll negotiate a bigger salary. So for example, if I didn’t get a salary increase the first year bc I started later in the year, then I’ll ask for a larger amount the 2nd year, and it will likely be granted.
Asking for a salary increase is a double edge sword, and you’ll have to sink or swim to add value to any firm.
That's exactly what I did. I only asked for the increase a year in after glowing reviews. But I hear what you are saying. I think I should have delayed asking for the increase.
