Ok. That's pretty cool.
I didn't do any of that, but I got an MBA and now I have the job you want.
MBA is by far the easiest route. I know people who’ve made the move directly, but even then it was facilitated by their MBA networks
Uhh no MBA? I don't think it's going to happen.
Is MBB an overall better company than Accenture? What sort of projects are you attracted to? How much better is comp? How is culture? Back stabbing, cut throat and climbing or helpful, smart and friendly people like Accenture?
OP, to be brutal about it: why would an MBB firm want to hire you over a candidate from one of the established recruiting pipelines like the MBA pool? The answer is, there really isn't an answer. You say this is something you want to pursue, others are telling you the simplest and most direct path -- do a couple of years at ACN strategy, get an M7 MBA and apply -- and you flatly state you are not willing to do that. The opportunity isn't going to fall in your lap. If you aren't willing to do what it takes your odds are not good.
Accenture Strategy to MBB laterals do happen at the junior level without an MBA (saw 4 these past 2 years). Hardest part is getting that interview. Network with partners/principals/alumni and make sure you're in tune with the office hiring cycle. Note, most junior laterals I've seen where from top undergrads and came in at A1/C1 level.
Differentiation isn't my concern. MBAs are a dime a dozen and I am confident that I have a unique skill set that would be sellable to partners specializing in my industry. Hopefully MBB can just get over the lack of school branding and focus on actual value creation. I hear you guys that the work exists somewhere in Accenture and I don't disagree. But still doesn't make up for the whole package gap...
What do you mean MBA doesn't make sense to you? You want to go to MBB. A top MBA is the standard path. An MBA makes a ton of sense in your shoes. Like your exact career ambition is literally why people get MBAs.
It doesn't matter how confident you are. It doesn't matter that you "don't think you should have to". It is what it is. I'm not saying it's impossible to get there from here without an MBA, but when you declare your goal and then immediately dismiss the highest probability, most well understood path there's not much left to say.
They will definitely take you without an MBA, but as someone else said the hardest part will be getting the interview. You should try to get a referral from a friend/ classmate or through networking. If that doesn’t work, apply directly. If your profile is good they will give you an interview. Even if you are rejected, and this is really what you want, you should keep trying. I have seen people get in, even after being rejected several times. It just takes some time and careful planning. Or if you are okay being unoriginal and wasteful with your money, go for the MBA route.
Wow, that's kinda a fucked up thing to say, M1.
OP, you might have to just work the network and get a partner to advocate to bring you in. It will be tough without the pedigree.
Is it just about the money? Or other issues with ACN?
Long term compensation is a big one. Then all the other obvious benefits (stronger talent, better projects, brand name, etc.) I 100% don't want to do an MBA - just not value add in my situation. So basically get a partner to support you is the ideal route?
I guess “are”, which firm are you targeting specifically?
BCG or Mckinsey. Nothing wrong with Accenture, it's just that other firms have more to offer in other areas. Culture differences is a food point and definitely something I would want to look into further.
Even though I'm in strategy it's pretty clear that the top projects (major company direction decisions, c suite, etc) are going to MBB. Accn 'strategy' is downstream; ie what are the strategic implications at more functional levels / operational strategy. But not going to lie, the $ is a big part; from what I've heard at the partner level the gap is significant as in hundreds of thousands. Am I wrong?
OP, I'm curious what part of strategy you're aligned to...
I'm at ACN doing work for the CSO of a major software company right now. Most of my projects have been like that. I know it's patchy, just curious where you've been working
Move into ZBS/ZBX that’s where you want to be for that exposure you so badly need
BCG1 completely agree but sometimes the simplest path isn't the only path? MBA doesn't make sense for me so I'm not going to do it. That said I don't think I should have to limit my career as a result. Completely accept that I will have to hustle harder than the average to make up for it. But extra work is a deal imo than taking two years of opportunity cost.
Anyways, trying to focus on a game plan here vs what my motivations are. Any other thoughts? Love the push back tho
@ BCG 1 - agree. He doesn't want to pay or put the work in... smh
I've worked for 3/3 top companies in my industry managing and launching new businesses, started and sold my own company, been promoted in strategy consulting past the position that MBAs come in at and am knowledgeable about leading tech in my field. Like I said, taking finance 101 in an MBA program isn't going to be value add. Oh, also the MBA would be paid for if I wanted...
