Can anyone at travelers give any insight on the underwriting professional development program? How is the training and overall experience working for travelers.. pros & cons..

I worked for them, not in the UW department, but I had many friends in the department. The general feeling that I get is that the caseload is overwhelming. The bonuses are hard to get that you have to max out metrics to obtain them.

I left Travelers because the management was micro-managing, and it was almost impossible to get a raise.

I don't know how much you are making now or what your bonus/benefits package looks like, so it may be a raise.

I can attest to this. I left for all the reasons that you listed above and was in the UW department. I hated the micro-management.

Training is pretty good, one line at a time and around a month per line/product type but can vary depending on business needs at the time (but at least a month per line is pretty standard I think). Classroom type training first then some hands on before you are released on your own. Very phone heavy once fully trained. Travelers as a company is very corporate-y but decent morale overall and my experiences with managers have all been positive. Bonuses aren’t great but pay is average to above average depending on your background. Workload was crazy for a while but is getting better due to some recent changes. Overall I really like working for travelers. Some people don’t like the phone based work and some don’t like the super corporate vibe. But it’s a solid company that has been around forever.

Travelers is big on personal development and goal setting, and they do have leadership trainings. So opportunities are out there and if you’re a high performer your managers will more than likely do what they can to see you advance.

Not sure how often they hire for the program. There’s been a big hiring effort for the last year so I’m not sure if it will continue this way or start to draw back.

And I’m in personal insurance so the phone heavy applies there, not sure about other departments.

Updp is about 4-6 months long. You will spend some time on your own in self learning and some time in class. There is also traveler a week at a time to the home office for training. You will train on each line of business before moving onto underwriting. You’ll get your first accounts after completely or when you’re close to completely you training. If you are not already versed in insurance, it is a steep learning curve. But if you are, which seems like you are, it is very good to get you set up and going as an underwriter.

like

It seems like a pretty thorough program. It’s some of the best training in the industry. The only comparable program I can think of is zZurich apprentice program.
