Can I leave my biglaw job 3 months before my COA clerkship? Not sure if it will look bad or like I have a gap in my resume. I’m going on 2 years at my firm and I can’t stand it. I’m burned out and the partners I work for told me not to take a vacation this year because of my upcoming clerkship. I have ALREADY billed 2,200 hours this year. I’m absolutely not coming back to this firm post-clerkship.

If you're looking for someone to convince you to do this for your sanity and health, I support you. Not gonna go into "well don't burn bridges, make sure you leave on good terms so they'll give you a reference in the future." Nah, screw that. Give your two weeks and be done. If they ask why, say you needed time off before your clerkship started to attend to personal matters.

Thanks!

Head promptly to the nearest exit.

You’ve got Big law and a COA clerkship - who cares about 3 months. If I were in your shoes, I would’ve given notice yesterday

like

If you’re concerned about a big gap, consider timing it so your last day would be the first week of November. You can then put Nov. 2021 on your resume going forward so it makes the gap look smaller.

like

Thanks! Sorry I didn’t clarify this in my post. Clerkship isn’t until August 2022 so I’m looking to leave the first week of May 2022 instead.

like

Absolutely leave. When you’re on your death bed in the future, you won’t look back and say “I’m so glad I gutted it out for Big Firm X before my clerkship, instead of taking those few weeks/months for myself.” There are partners at these firms that have been divorced six times, sexually assaulted people, cheated on their spouses, inflated billing, etc. You will be fine. Take the opportunity to do something cool!

like

Get out of there!!

Believe me when I say the most gloriously relaxed times in my legal career have been when I’ve been between jobs. I try to take at least a month in between. The ability to do whatever you want, whenever you want to, never looking at email - you could literally bury your phone in a hole if you wanted to - it is impossible to put a price on that. No one will care (or frankly are even likely to notice) that you have a few months in between biglaw and a COA clerkship. As others have said, you can always say in an interview if it comes up that you had to take time in between to attend to some personal matters. If the place you’re hiring pushes you on that, you probably don’t want to work there anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ enjoy and congrats!!

like

Also, if I were interviewing you for a position at my firm and I saw you had that gap, personally for me it would be a thumbs up. It says, here is a person in charge of their career, as opposed to someone who passively lets things happen to them. In my experience, those people make the best lawyers (as opposed to the best workers - two different things)

like

Leave immediately. A good friend spent 3 months living in a van surfing before starting his clerkship. No issues.

like

Attend to personal matters and enjoy life! That 3 month gap won't make a difference, particularly since you'll be coming from a clerkship.

like

I was going to say go ahead and take the gap but the urgency of that advice got more extreme as I read. Put in your 2 weeks, like, yesterday. No one will even notice the gap in your resume and if they do you can easily explain it away that you wanted to take care of some personal goals before starting the next stage in your life.

like

I’ve had resume gaps that turned into great interview discussions points. Makes you far more interesting taking that time to do something fun. People will respect you more for doing so too. In short, quit now.

like

Definitely just go. Dont worry about bridges unless this is some mythical irreplaceable firm

like

Don’t you want to at least stay until your bonus hits? You can slowly start ramping down too. I know that’s not what you want yo hear, but we’re talking about tens of thousands of dollars when you consider an extra month or two of work plus bonus.

like

Oh lol, yeah get out of there and have an awesome summer then.

For future people reading this: mental health comes before money!

like

Do something during that time and it’s no longer a resume gap. It can be anything. Travel. Woodworking. Time with the kids. Whatever. No one cares if you have a story. It’s only if you say “I was looking for work for two years and no one would hire me” that resume gaps matter. Its 2021.

like

Even if you quit now (which sounds like the smart move), I don't think it'd be a big deal. Leave and never look back.

I took two months off, and my other clerk friend took four. Do what you want.

If you're heading to a Federal appellate clerkship I don't think anyone will blink about a "gap" bc your clerkship will be all they notice and it may be easier to take time off now than rolling off your clerkship
