Can someone explain the difference between being counseled out and being fired? With an emphasis on why counsel someone out but not fire them, and vice versa.

Tax Senior here. I’m well liked around the office, I put in the hours and work hard, I haven’t had any dumpster fire projects, but I am a mediocre performer compared to my peers (not as strong project management, communication, not as confident). I just got told they’re firing me. Should I expect severance? Have other people been fired for similar? What did you do with your career?

A friend of mine from a top tier consulting firm was counseled out. Do you consider it ethical that his career counselor is intentially spreading the information to his colleagues and to other consultants from other companies in the project? What can he do about it? Specially that he considers the potential layoff is purely based on the current situation (chargeability was low) and not on his performance (they said that his contribution to BD during his bench time was low)?

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? I was listening to Jesus Lord on Kanye's new album and I had flashbacks. I grew up in the hood and had a highly impoverished and violent upbringing. Joining a gang was like joining the army and it was a rite of passage for a lot of folks. Thankfully I got out unscathed, but friends and family weren't as fortunate.
