What is a simple way to explain to my boyfriend that investing in equity with an expected return of 10% is better than paying off debt that is growing at a rate of 6%. He has student loans and is adamant that he wants to pay all of them off immediately before saving any retirement money. I understand that many individuals use this strategy but I think investing in index funds for the long haul is better from a wealth accumulation perspective, without even factoring in tax implications of 401k

I will not hesitate to invest/save for retirement and throw a few k into those accounts regularly, but when it comes to myself I hesitate to buy anything unless I absolutely need it? Im a minimalist and if stuff still works I will keep it.
