Can you become a good leader or do you have to “be born with it”? I’m smart and really good at accounting but I don’t feel like I lead my team of 9 well (I’m in industry now). Wondering if there are books or podcasts I can read/listen to in order to upskill my leadership skills?

Be genuine and treat people the way you want to be treated. Rememeber, you work for the team, and if the team fail, you fail. Do not micromanage, give the team their freedom, get in touch with them personally (they are not machines or simply disposable resources), and set reasonable objectives. If you ever want to progress in any role, your team must support you, and if not you will be always on the edge even if you got some higher up support. Some team members are harder to deal with, doesnt mean they are bad, it could be personal attributes, they are good for you coz they will keep the entire team balanced (risk averse vs. risk taker, listener vs. talker, etc)

To me, 1 of 2 skills come to mind regarding great leaders. Either the person is born very personable and able to make connections easily OR they truly care about their team and want what’s best for each one individually (even if that means not what’s best for the group).

The fact you here looking for guidance is a great sign and good indication you’re doing something right. I would say 1:1 are one of the best times to make things lighter and more personable. Ask about their life but also tell them about yours. Show your true colors and weaknesses/faults if they come up. Showing honest vulnerabilities shows people you’re human and just like them (only doing the job a little longer)

Your most likely on the right track if you’re asking this. Most people want to know the person leading them cares about their wellbeing

It takes time .. I’m the same! I would say stay and keep the team organized (trackers, weekly calls), reach out to them once in a while to see if they need any help or need clarification on anything (including the lower level staff), be personable by sharing your life, try to reply to their messages when they reach out, lead by example by sharing what you are also working on.. those are the major areas I can think off to create a great team environment (and be a great leader as a result)

My favorite resource is a management tip of the day email from HBR. Some aren’t relevant but there have been some good ones that I’ve implemented. HBR also has podcasts on leadership, but I find it hard to focus on them enough to implement what’s discussed

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
