I think most people do
It is possible to enter the field of risk management without a degree, but it can be challenging. The skill surely does matter but degree is important especially when applying for risk management roles, especially at advanced levels.
With that experience, I’d look for commercial lines underwriting associate/assistant roles as a very plausible way to get your foot in the door.
***Keep in mind, these roles will very likely pay significantly less than what I imagine you make currently in commission after building your commercial book for 5 years. Your active agent license will benefit you compensation-wise, as will any current and/or future designations. Not having the degree will hurt you though. That’s something you just have to come to terms with until your proficiency and mastery of your craft speak for themselves.
Also, don’t be afraid to move around if it’s a move up, just don’t hop around too much for parallel positions if you can help it. A longer employer history is easier to explain when it reflects that it was continuously furthering your career, and not just a lot of parallel moves that could allow the assumption of you simply being difficult to work with or keep employed for a plethora of negative reasons lol.
It can be done, because I did it. But I’ve had to bust my ass every step of the way and really master my craft.
It took me 6 years to go from my first CSR agency job to getting to wear an underwriting hat. It wasn’t easy and took some very strategic moves along the way. Always moving up in my next role, one step closer to the goal.
I’ve got over 11 years under my belt now, I’m VERY skilled at what I do, and I still don’t have the degree nor need one. And I say that in the most humble sense… I just know my worth because I put in the WORK to get here, and I’m proud of that.
It can be done if you want it enough.
Thank you!
Yes I got into underwriting without any insurance experience at all but I did have a BA and prior experience working in offices. Majority of the people I worked with when I started did not have risk management degrees either and had college degrees in all different subjects. A few people didn’t have a college degree at all.
