No. That seems ludicrous.
What’s ludicrous about it?
Nope. Don’t be silly.
A1 - I understand where you are coming from; however, question is: should that necessitate a teacher’s strike in a city that is broke. I’m in a practice that is woefully short of resources, meaning I have to work extra hard, but that doesn’t mean I should strike. But let me put it to you this way, A1: the strike is an inconvenience for parents of students in the hundreds of thousands. So it’s not the inconvenience of the school without a librarian but if parents on all sides of the city dealing in various socioeconomic groups dealing with the effects of unplanned two weeks out of school. Let’s take the emotions out of this and accept the reality of a broke city having to pony up $1.7 billion. Only $35 million went to relieve overcrowded classrooms (source:WBEZ). The city agreed to hire 250 nurses and 209 social workers (source: Trib, and many of whom are already privately contracted)- let’s say $100k cost per employee and round the number to 500 - so now I’m at $50 million. And by the way, A1, I agree with your concerns of overcrowded classrooms, and lack of nurses or social workers. So I worked out $85 mm. How about if we start figuring out the remainder of the $1.7mm so far. You with me on the numbers?
I’d find it unusual that parents would be able to put their kids in a private school mid year. They have specific cycles and generally specific entry points kindergarten, middle school, high school. It’s very short sighted to do that. The last strike was 7 years ago. While it sucks I do understand what both sides were fighting for. Though the teachers union didn’t win any friends for staying out an extra day to try and get 10 days of pay back
Our neighborhood catholic school accepted nine new families in the last couple weeks
Huh? No. Was I upset? Yes. Did I uproot my kids from their school because of it? No
