Although I don't know about the culture or career progression at OW. I would not make that mistake again of leaving a senior position to start from the scratch.
OW offers similar pay to MBB, comparable talent, just less breadth of industry. If you know what industry you want to work in, we do a handful of them extremely well. MBB is better branding if you’re looking to exit, but the differences in the day-to-day are likely to be negligible.
I see people make moves like this all the time and it never turns out well. Take the SM job somewhere else.
Thanks OW1. That’s good to know. Recruiter said usually they try to fast track experienced hires to EM. Also, I was told salaries are not that negotiable and most Associates come in around the same band. I am coming in at mid 100s.
Not sure how far you’ve progressed interviewing for SM roles at the other big4, but I know that we often advise 3rd year managers to make a lateral move to Deloitte... SM is a really hard level when you just join a firm: need to rebuild your network, build a pipeline, have significant sales targets off the bat... not that it can’t be done, but I would expect a manager role for at least a year (at Deloitte)
I wouldn't come here as an experienced hire. They don't fare well.
I moved from big 4 as SM to OW associate, and was promised all the fast track stuff as well by the recruiter.
But the truth is it’s really hard to come is an EH and perform well so easy to get stuck. But also the quality of work is far superior at ow so it’s understandable to be dropped from big 4 levels.
Tried for EM at OW, but they apparently bring people usually a level below. Care more about quality of work and eventual trajectory than intermediate salary
Are you coming in aligned to a practice? I would hope it’s at a higher Associate level, as the step down isn’t immaterial, especially when compared to your other SM option. What do the manager positions pay? Associates here make mid to high 100’s depending on level, I believe. You can make EM after 1 year as an Associate here if you’re good.
Yeah although I will say that we work pretty hard. I don’t know how old you are, but since you’re up for SM roles you might have family commitments or other priorities. Associates here can have it rough. Long term upside is probably higher here, but the SM role doesn’t sound bad at all, especially if you want out of the meatgrinder phase. I don’t mean to say it’s that bad, I still love it here and have done some sweet strategy work with some of the smartest people I know. The positives vastly outweigh the negatives.
Totally confused. What practice? Senior manager is two levels up compared to associate. Not even sure how to compare.
Digital Tech Ops and Analytics. I am equally confused. Working for OW was sort of a long term wish for me. But going from 3rd year M to an Associate is a bit bizarre.
Trade-off is quality, long term upside vs salary, work-life balance (not really that much work - life balance as a SM tbh)
SM is only two steps away from Partner if that is your goal. Also plenty of exit opps from SM at Big4.
Recruiter sold me the same shit "we promote experienced hires faster" and left a Manager position at a Big 4.
Why a dream to work for OW? I can understand for MBB. But OW? Great firm but not sure about the dream part. So as an associate are they paying more than 3Y KPMG manager?
I think the recruiter is blowing smoke
Seems like a step down if you're going from manager to associate even if its OW. Lateral to another big four firm to increase pay? Senior manager may be tough for the reasons listed above.
You should take the SM role. Why on earth would you want to go back to being a pleb? I don’t care how awesome whatever group you’re interviewing with at OW is, there is no way it’s worth it
No comparison! SM role
I vote tough it out as M a while longer and look for an M or SM role somewhere else as prestigious as OW.
