Deloitte partners, I’m interviewing for Deloitte S&O manager. After reading posts here, my understanding is that there are 2 tracks.

There are several career tracks at Deloitte. To help answer your question, let’s start at the top. A “partner” is a partner level role with CPA in our audit business. A “principal” is a partner level role in our consulting business. And a “managing director” is a non equity stake partner level role.

S&O is consulting so let’s focus there. The traditional path goes from analyst to consultant to senior consultant to manager to senior manager to either principal or managing director. You select final destination at the SM level. We also have a specialist track that allows you to not be in the up or out model. The specialist roles parallel the normal track roles but have different performance metrics.

Just to add some clarity around P vs MD... both are treated very similarly. P has an equity position, making it a longer game as you grow your capital in the firm and work toward retirement. MDs are typically either deep subject experts or deep delivery experts. They make a salary. Lots of factors go into the decision but my advice would be not to take the P path without a pan to stick around for 10 years. There is enormous variability in wha our principals an managing directors are paid.

To add to P1, MD and Principal are no longer different “tracks” (at least, that’s what’s been communicated most recently and many of this year’s MDs have the same profile as Ps). So I just wouldn’t worry about that distinction right now. Instead, focus on whether or not you can see yourself enjoying working with the people from D you know and will meet

...Cont
and Director track”: levels are unclear to me.
1. At what level do you get selected to a path?
2. What are the levels and average comps in the “director track”?
3. How do you select the path for an individual at the level mentioned in (1)? What factors do you consider?
Thank you!

Wow. None of this is accurate. What do you do? Start there ...

D1. Principal and Partner have mandatory forced retirement at 62. If you don’t have enough time to fully vest in the plan, you would think about going MD path instead

like

Sorry one last question...
4. Who is a Principal and which track does Principal belong to?

D1: Well, this is the perception outsiders get. I’m a manager at another consulting firm working in pharma/biotech and currently at early stages of interviews with Deloitte S&O. I want to know more about the org structure and what’s realistic for my career if I join Deloitte. Not the picture paints my HR contact — you can be a partner if you want to be a partner :-)
Not sure I understand the difference between associate partner, partner, Principal, MD and all different career tracks in S&O.
Trust me, Deloitte org structure, timeline for each level, and purpose of different tracks are not very clear if you are an outsider trying to learn about what you are getting yourself into.
Thank you in advance for any info you can provide!

Thank you, P1 and D1. Very helpful info. Suggestion: you should tell your hiring team to put above info on your career page. There is lot of misinformation on D career path on the web. Again, 🙏

I have no intention of joining Deloitte but curious why one would stay at MD vs P? Seems like the Principles have equity and actual skin in the game, thereby stronger upside and better motivation. Are metrics different for MD’s, eg sales?

There has to be more than age restrictions, i am 32 if that matters.

For me, in my mid 40’s, it really is a math equation.

Any other criteria besides age? 62 is a long ways from now, even the guy above has over 15 years.

I’m starting a financial analyst position at a major hospital system in my area soon and want to stick with that for a couple years before making a transition but was curious if I just don’t have the right experience for a role in advisory.
