Do creative strategies for applying for a job ever work? I’m talking about the fearless girl in front of McCann, or any similar strategy.

If you have a cool idea, you have a cool idea. But yeah...the other 99% of us just put our books out there and hustle when it comes to networking.

No need for a tap dance routine to get yourself into our 80-hour per week industry.

like

If you have an idea you think is cool, go for it. All of this is super subjective. Everyone thought that idea of imitating fearless girl was horrific and pandering, except the CD at McCann...so really if you impress one person, it’s a success. That being said, if you go the crazy route, your book better be solid

like

Senior Copywriter 1: that idea didn't impress the CD. It put the whole agency in a position where they couldn't say no. They offered her a 60-day freelance spot for PR.

OP: creative stunts are hard. Most of them fail or leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Focus your energy on building a good book, building good relationships, and if you still think you need more, building a good side project that you can pimp to the trade pubs and CDs.

When I was taking classes at SVA a copywriter came in and talked with us about the business. He and his art director partner created their books together; he did the writing, she took care of the art direction. He sent out a promotional piece, she did not. Within a week he had two offers. A year later she was still looking for a job. So if you have something that’s great and relevant send it out and follow up with a phone call or email. I followed his lead and it has worked for me. Good luck.

like

Probably, but I wouldn't recommend it. A lot of people are going to feel like you cheated and there are other ways to get CDs to look at your book.

like

They say that nothing kills a bad product faster than good advertising. The same is true with stunts. Sure they’re a great way to stand out, but if your book is not up to snuff it’s going to do you more harm than good.

Think of the stunt as the cherry on top of your solid portfolio. The thing that pushes them over the edge to say yes. My partner and I created a stunt tailored so specifically to the agency that we wanted to work at, that it actually gave us a head start on better projects when we got hired.

It’s a way to make yourself heard but you absolutely have to be able to back it up with solid work.

like

You should make a rap video, I heard that works wonders

likefunny

as long as your work backs up the gimmick, it’s fine

like

We only hear about the successes. Which are very rare.

like

Great! Thank you for the advice

Spend your time working on your book, not your gimmick. That’s what’s going to get you the job.

I don’t understand why you guys are shitting on the Sprite rap video. I think it was great and certainly did it’s job. Far more work and creativity went into that than the Fearless girl stunt.

I left Audit at a midsize firm to join KPMG erp implementation consulting about 6 months ago. So far they seem to only want to staff me on projects with a heavy focus on technical accounting and audit. Spoke to a lot of others who have left and seems like being pigeonholed or staffed on projects not related to the actual core work of the practice is the common reason. I've been on the fence about whether I should stay and hope to be staffed on better projects in the future or leave soon...
