I don’t have an MBA, but landed brand side and would echo the comment about reframing agency experience. Agency side trains you to dazzle, look smart, and win. Brand side is 1000% about cross-functional collaboration, politicking, and being a brand steward. It’s a tough pill to swallow at first but gets easier the more you lean into it.
Yes, they do and it will be help against you if you don’t. I have a masters in engineering from one of the top 10 engineering schools in the country, but that was considered inferior to all the MBAs and their talk of EBITDA, OKRs, etc
Damn I guess what can I get into without an MBA? Currently upper level at a media agency and trying to make the leap eventually
A lot of folks use their agency creds to get in, then use Corporate tuition benefits to get their MBAs.
This varies by company and hiring manager. Broadly speaking, it's not a must have to move client side. Just depends on where you're going. I don't look for MBAs for my team, I much prefer strong agency experience.
The high pace, multiple client agency model means that for every situation a corporate marketer sees, their agency counterpart has seen 10. And they have insight from 20 market segments, not 1 or 2.
Have confidence in your experience and insights, build your own story, and go get the role you want. 3 years of school and $300k of debt is one way to do it I guess, but why choose that path if you don't have to?
No, but reframe your agency spiel/ convo, success is different to the agency world, so ensure you are clear on how your experience can help achieve success.
What can you offer that an MBA can’t?
