Yes if only for appearances
I’m going to challenge the above - no - if you’re doing fine / have good ratings right now. I used to always be logged in and the result was just my time being wasted by dumb questions or getting extra work. After stopping logging in, I’ve found that people email or call me for anything that’s truly important anyway, and I still got good reviews. But if you have poor reviews perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad idea to be online as maybe not being able to get in contact with you might be affecting them.
Interesting take... it’s actually not a bad idea. what’s your level?
Yes, if I’m working, I’m logged into Skype. It’s also an easy way for people to get into contact with me to ask simple questions (reduce email traffic)
Partner here. If I don’t see someone on Skype. The opportunity may go to the next person (or may email) not depends on how time sensitive. Now. Some people will say great I don’t want that BS question or assignment.. but there is sometimes also really good visibility and leads to something pretty good.
OP. But if people are bothering you with distractions, not real work matters you do need to cut that off. Say I’m prepping for a meeting or don’t respond. Or turn it to busy ( won’t stop it but may cut down)
My team is virtual - I get super annoyed when I see their status as “away” constantly during the workday - it makes me wonder what they are doing. If you decide to do that, you better be coming across as the most diligent, prompt and productive person on your team.
Yes
I feel it’s a distraction. So I don’t log in if I don’t need to.
^exactly! Most people on my team email if they need something or call. But if I’m on Skype someone will message me or I message someone and it throws off my focus. I am a very social person, go to happy hours and other team/ firm events. When I want to interact I just talk in person to team members or ask to go to coffee.
