I have an accounting degree but I've never posted a journal entry in my life. I still call myself an accountant because no one else would understand what I actually do and it doesn't really matter. People just need to know what bucket to put you in. Dr, lawyer, trades, nurse, pilot, etc.
Do you do accounting? Then you’re an accountant
I don’t mean to be unsupportive but I would call this person a bookkeeper - the difference being a higher understanding and ability to analyze financial data in the bigger picture
What you do for a living is related to your day to day activity regardless of the degree.
Yes. You could have a degree in sociology or psychology but if you work as an accountant, you’re an accountant.
I think it depends on who you're talking to. Are you talking to another accountant? Then maybe you can be more specific. But if you're talking to someone who has no idea about the work anyways, might as well say accountant. Also it really doesn't matter lol
This right here
Having an accounting degree and having a title where you are doing true accounting work. AP or AR is not accounting IMO . It’s like when CNA act like they are nurses… you are not
Once you have CPA, the degree doesn't matter anymore.
Agree that there are many accountants out there and it isn’t only limited to having a CPA. Engineering is a great example of it, anytime somebody says that, there are like a hundred different meanings to that, sometimes it is easier to just give the broad name and then getting into specifics when you need to.
Please don’t let the degree (a piece of paper) define who you are. If you do accounting, you can certainly call yourself accountant if you like. I am in accounting doing automation, so I call myself an engineer (just because I want a higher pay). My degree is in bio tech.
I think we’re just trying to make sure no bookkeepers call themselves accountants
Bookkeeping is data entry however possible or inaccurate
Accounting is GAAP based and if it’s tax based then it’s anything that requires a balance sheet and even then ur only a proper tax “accountant” if you do the tax accounting for multi layer partnerships or c corporation deferred tax and tax provision journal entries
Otherwise you’re just a tax preparer
So there’s a distinguishing from bookkeeper and accountant and
Also tax preparer and tax accountant
Yes you are!
As a bookkeeper handling the day-to-day finances of HNW and entertainment industry clientele, I was told to never give advice about taxes. But I also worked with business school graduates who were processing A/P and A/R, while on the path to becoming a CPA, and expected me to know how compile work papers, without giving me any instructions on how to perform that task. I was willing to learn, but was told in a snooty voice, "now we'll have to do your work for you". I couldn't wait for April 16th to arrive, and leave that hellhole.
Well, to be honest if you get a job as an accountant and I've not had any education but just experience. You better get an education because all accountants CPA are not have some familiarity with GAAP, FASB taxes , audits, and understand the various financial statements. That is the fundamental difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant. I was an accountant when I became a CFO. I would tell people I was a CFO not an accountant. Although accounting plays a big role there are many other responsibilities under that title.
I have a bachelor's degree in accounting, but I wouldn't call myself an accountant because all I do is reconcile bank statements and payroll.
Well, you know you still can be one get a different job a better job. Reconciling is a very important concept because it applies to everything whether it's payroll investments ,variance analysis, accounts, payable accounts, receivable, expense accounts, problem-solving, so don't underestimate your skill set. Just get out of that job and get a better one.
You are an accountant if you do accounting work and a bookkeeper if you do bookkeeping work
