Can we cut down on this WWIII hype already?
Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?
Houston downtown JW vs Westin.. Thoughts?

It’s a cert. And like most certs, it means you invested time to learn about xyz. It also shows you have a certain level of competence. I’m not impressed by CPAs, Series 7, etc either, but to say you look down on someone for having a specific cert is kinda silly.
PMP is a joke certification. But I wouldn’t look down at PMO work. For complex projects, I think it is quite valuable work
74% of all projects fail.. people who think PMing an effort is easy- think about this statistic for a second.. I am not PMP is the fix, but getting a good PM is important.. if you guys feel that the PM on your project can be replaced by a child, that PM is probably not a good PM.
Disclaimer- I am not a PMO resource, but I have seen far too many projects get derailed and too many $$ wasted due to bad PMs.
I do. To me It means the person is aware of project structure, what is needed to be done and basically at a bare minimum is aware of what they are doing. I’m not a PMP but I’d definitely like to get certified.
Whoever says the PMP is an easy exam has not taken it. It is one of the most difficult exams to take right next to the CISSP. I’m not saying it is or isn’t worth anything, but saying the certificate is easy to obtain is straight BS
Looking down on any work as a consultant seems silly.
PMP is a joke. BS certification, and you have to be stupid to fail it. Just a $ machine
No.
D1 how many PMPs have you talked to that said the material elevated their work? I ask because the almost ubiquitous answer I get is no. Lol
I especially hate PM's that act like the world will fall apart if they weren't there...like shit dude, you could be replaced with a child and we'd still be good.
As an engineer stuck doing pmo work right now....anyone can do this. Also it's boring af.
Don’t have the cert, but I’m on a PMO for a lot of M&A tech and cyber work and it’s certainly challenging work that is bringing together multiple teams and workstreams.
I think it is more difficult to PM than people here realize.
PMP is a great program and would be useful for anyone who works project work.
PMP will not get you a raise, but may help negotiate a higher salary at a new employer.
PMO in consulting is not actually PMO - it’s project admin that the project manager is supposed to do. Great to have admin staffers to dump it off on, but projects do not have their own PMO.
A PMO is a centralized function like a center of excellence where standards, approaches, methodologies, templates on content are maintained, and guidance of project teams is offered.
Of course you should not look down on your peers the project admins ~cough~ PMO ~cough~, any more than you would a actual admin or a janitor. But they aren’t actually PMO.
A project manager is part of the PMO. You cannot advance to an executive level if you cannot be an effective PM. So I really don’t get the comment at all. Are you talking about the PMO support staff that support the PM? Who are you talking about?
No
No.
I may be a bit biased because I began my career in engineering and all my peers used to not give a shit about project managers as it's basic work so that formed my opinion of them.
Like most certifications, it isn’t a true differentiator, but is often a wanted requirement for the thought process it puts in place by recruiters, etc. And while not a fan of PMO (esp the minutia of status reports), on large projects it serves a purpose of getting multiple workstreams working at different paces to talk to each other and produce the enterprise view of the project for leadership, integrated timelines, etc.
I am a program lead and overall client delivery lead ... I have done virtually every job that I manage ... its not easy and these programs are not successful without effective leadership. I never bothered to pursue a PMP cert as it has no comparison to big consulting management experience.
This may be a stupid question: but, are PM’s on strategy assignments/at strategy firms really thinking about budget or the actual analysis? Thought PMO was more for management and tech consulting
...p2 said as the project burned around them.
