Yes. I have no clue how to ask or even what to ask my secretary to do.
I try as hard as I can, especially now, to give my assistant things to do because I’m worried they’re all on the chopping block now.
You aren't asking them to do work for you. You are giving them the opportunity to do their job. They didn't apply to be a secretary or paralegal expecting to do glamorous work. Do what you can to make them feel like a part of a team. Make clear that their contributions are helping make clients happy and get important projects done. Let them share in your success so that they are invested in your projects.
Do you feel awkward when a supervising attorney gives you work to do? Hopefully not. Hopefully you view it as an opportunity to impress and be more important for the firm.
Yes!! Nothing wrong with being a secretary and doing related work. There is no shame so don’t feel shame assigning those tasks.
I used to but now I do it as more of a team approach because I felt awkward delegating. I.e. here’s the plan for this file - I’ll do x, can you handle y
I take this approach as well, and it works out great. I feel like my assistant is more invested in doing a good job because it’s “our” case.
Yes. I have a hard time returning work I reviewed and edited...
You have to take the time to build a working relationship with them. Start out small, like asking them to enter your time or make binders for you. Over time you will start to figure out how they can help you. You don't need to feel comfortable with it right away. Just don't make it awkward.
I try my best to thank support staff for all they're doing and be sure to not ask for too many tasks "urgently" if I can give a heads up 1-2 days in advance. However, I'm coming up against a roadblock because my much older paralegal is working at a slower pace then I'd like and feels uncomfortable around technology that comes to me second nature. Any ideas of how to broach the topic kindly? I've been at the firm less than 6 months.
Yep. I share support staff and I know other attorneys utilize them more than I do. I honestly don’t know what I should be having them do. I manage to handle the admin stuff myself and I feel like asking our support staff to do things for me is just passing the buck on stuff I don’t like doing. I’ve even gotten talked too about not utilizing them enough. I just feel awkward asking for someone to do things for me when I don’t currently have any problems doing it myself.
This is exactly how I feel! Sometimes they even come to my office asking if there is anything they want me to do and I’m just sitting there like I’m not really sure... lol
So glad I stumbled upon this thread. Ugh, this is me. I’m already a bit shy so I feel guilty asking for things, but I am trying to approach this from the “we are a team” perspective, and that has helped some. I guess I’m afraid of coming off as a jerk so I overcompensate by never asking for help.
YES!! This is exactly how I feel!!
