๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ I took a new role during Covid and it checked 2/3 boxes I was looking for but it was lateral and a bigger step back than I thought. Lucky to have a job but since the job market seems to be booming Iโm wondering if I made a mistake because Iโm not living up to my full potential with this role

I have always felt this way, then I remember being anxious is what drives me to seek the next possibilities, while not all โnext roleโ is advancement, they partially led to who I am today. If humans were always satisfied we would not have a civilization!

Wasting time, no. As much as I am burned out at what I do now, it looks good on my resume so it doesnโt hurt me to keep doing this. I have an internal drive to make changes every 3-5 years so I donโt feel itโs a bad thing to feel like you are falling behind. It can drive you for more career advancement.
I was in the job where I felt like I was learning nothing. Looking back I wasnโt learning as much as I would like to but definitely learnt some. Youโre doing the right thing - keep interviewing until you find something that ticks all the boxes. If you in the meantime want to feel like you take your progress in your hands you can start a qualification e.g. CFA or something relevant to the field you are applying to.
To be honest, I would question what exactly it is about your current role that is wasting your time and having you fear falling behind?
Thereโs always opportunities to learn and do more, while itโs not ideal if you donโt have great engagement with your managers or good developmental opportunities given to you, thereโs nothing stopping you from trying to go above and beyond or get exposure to the things you want. Thereโs obviously something there that initially drew you to that role, sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands and have a candid conversation with your manager.
Nothing you do is a waste. Everything is a learning opportunity; whether it is in this role or the next role take this time to reflect on what you want out of life, this role, and the next role. Use any downtime to learn new skills.
Eh, maybe to a certain degree. Do I think a few more years in PE will be a waste of time? Potentially, if I think Iโm better served starting my own company or going to the corporate side to learn more about operations. On the flip side, staying in PE will allow me to learn about more types of companies and get more exposure to what makes a good company โtickโ. I just need to make up my mind about if Iโve learned enough to this point to do my own thing/go corporate or if I should stick around. This is kind of a stream of consciousness but I do agree with you that I ask myself the question of โis this worth my timeโ constantly.
