Check your local paralegal professionals association. They may have virtual classes on this.
Look at the firm’s case files on your own time. Look into CLE’s on discovery.
Thank you for asking. I am about to become a certified paralegal and only need to complete one remaining math course. However, I feel that the program did not provide sufficient training on discovery. Most of what I learned about discovery came from working at a trial firm, and even then, it is an area I struggle in.
Discovery is pretty straightforward.
Responding- There’s a dozen or so objections you can make. Once you pull the case law for each, it’s just copy and paste. Realistically 2-3 might apply to a given response but depending on your attorney you might add some additional filler type ones to avoid “waiving the issue.”
On propounding- it’s your basic who/what/where/when/why. Do you assert X? What are all facts that support that assertion? Who are all the people who know those facts. What are all the documents supporting those facts?
Have you reviewed jury instructions before? They’re pretty great at laying out the specific elements of a claim/defense that must be proven. That’s always where you start when figuring out what questions to ask (as the complaint/answer is usually going to be light on specific facts)
the San Diego legal secretaries offer is two self-paced discovery classes. I take them as a refresher every two or three years just to make sure I’m up-to-date on everything very reasonable and I love that it’s self paced and about eight weeks..
